Dogs played a very
important role in Vietnam. As it is with most K-9 Police Units here
in the U.S., the dog and the handler were a permanent team, and,
except for kenneling, were never separated from each other.
These brave animals
often went first into tunnels and villages of unknown "friendliness",
and as such would draw the attention of the occupants. There are times
when the dog would also draw the attention of a bullet or "booby trap".
It has been said that over 10,000 American lives were saved due to the
allegience of "dog to master", and the bravery of these magnificent
animals. Sadly, many dogs gave their lives. Therefore, when a dog
was wounded he was treated
exactly the same as if he were
a General.

It
is not known whether the dog in the picture survived his ordeal. I do
know, however, that he most likely received the best care possible.
And that is as it
should be.
